Hey girl, what’s your birth order?

Like many believe in the power of western astrology or the Chinese zodiac, I am a big proponent of the birth order effect. Oh, he’s a creative but shy? Must be because he’s a middle child. She’s selfish? Must be because she’s an only child and never learned to share. She’s aggressive and bossy? Must be a first-born. (That’s me. LOL.)  These are my assessments, not necessarily those of expert opinions that matter.

In the words of Jesse Pinkman “yeah, science!” I have always been more of a nurture versus nature girl myself so this is a natural inclination. Although I do believe there are cases where no matter the environment, some just turn out the way they do (good or bad) and nature rules. And I know a few exceptions to the birth order effect, of course. Any who, I find this topic fascinating and to me, it makes sense 80% of the time. Although I can’t personally account for those that come from huge families. I think this is good to keep in mind for parenting and learning to understand people’s personalities.  Plus I find it interesting that half of all US presidents and 21 of 23 US astronauts were first-borns.  Not that I’m biased or anything 😉

I want to thank our veterans and current troops for their service to ensure Americans get to live freely and in the pursuit of happiness. Most of us have loved ones either in the military or who are veterans. I am especially thinking of my newly veteran cousin who recently separated from the US Navy (she’s still in the reserves.) Also to my co-workers and friends who are/were Sailors, Soldiers, Marines, Air(wo)men and Coasties. Thank you all!20131111-123715.jpg

On a whim, one of my besties and I decided to enjoy Pennsylvania’s taxless clothing shopping at the King of Prussia mall. It is a huge mall but with pretty much all the stores we have in the DC area. I did find an item to add to my wish list – a pair of Tom Ford sunglasses that I can’t afford at the moment. Haha. But they’re so much fun! See below and don’t mind the hanging price tag 🙂

I decided on being comfortable but to also wear my Frye boots to break them in. For my pants, I just wore my UnderArmour leggings. Definitely one of my favorite clothing items. On top, I wore a loose knit sweater from Forever 21. Makeup – Makeup Forever waterproof eyeliner and MAC lipstick in Media.

On Thursdays, I usually post a bathroom selfie on Instagram of what I’m wearing to work that day. This tradition started because there are an unusual number of bathroom stalls; which makes for good perspective. A fair warning, however, I don’t have a constantly new wardrobe by season. I tend to buy pieces that are classic and I will wear for awhile, especially for work. For play, on the other hand…

My usual uniform for work is a dress with a blazer. Or a pencil skirt and blouse. But because I am avoiding heels at the moment, I’m wearing flats. Why am I avoiding heels at the moment? Well a couple of weeks ago, I played in my 2nd golf tournament and always tend to forget my favorite tee (yes, I’m weird but my mom gave it to me) after driving the ball. I ran back to last hole and slightly twisted my ankle. Golf shoes do not equal running shoes.

Okay, back to THIS post. Haha. This is my OOTD (Outfit of the Day). Black ankle pants from Ann Taylor recently. Pink flats. Pink silk blouse. Black pinstripe vest.

Beauty, Chanel, H20 Plus, Moisturizer, Skin Care, Sunscreen, Ulta

It’s been almost a week of not having my favorite daytime moisturizer. I got the package yesterday and I’m ecstatic. From Ulta, I bought two of the H2O Plus Face Oasis Hydrating Lotion SPF 30 and a free gift of mini items I like to collect and take on trips. Planning on replacing my beat up cosmetic bag with this new one. Also, impressed with the biggest sample I’ve ever received of a moisturizer. Props to DDF. Look at that thing! (The white cylindrical item)

As a firm believer of wearing sunscreen everyday, it took me a good while to find one that wasn’t greasy. With my oily skin, that was shine city waiting to happen. I came across this H2O Plus product and haven’t turned back. Prior to this, I used a Chanel product but liked the higher SPF on the Face Oasis. The only qualm I have about this product is that the packaging isn’t ideal. I can’t tell when I’m running out so it’s like playing roulette. Also I’ve also read many reviews where the dispenser gets stuck but *knock on wood* this hasn’t happened to me.

Oh and the Sea Salt lotion or body butter smells divine!

Although I technically did not have a costume for Halloween, I did dress according to the tradition for a couple of events. One being a Roaring 20’s party earlier in the month for my friend Tiffany’s birthday. See below:

The dress and headpiece were from Zara. Similar items here and here.

Hair: a combination of tutorials from YouTube. For long hair and finger waves. FYSA – I have unruly, thick hair. It was nearly impossible for the finger waves to stay put. But I tried. By the end of the night, my bobby pins were falling out but hey I had fun 😉

For the night of Halloween, I decided to get in the spirit by decorating my face into an interpretation of the Mexican Day of the Dead sugar skull makeup. This was done with tons of black creme liner, black eye shadow, black pencil liner, mascara and half baked eye shadow from my Urban Decay Naked 2 palette.

Gives you the creepy-crawlies, yeah? Haha.

And lastly, for my bestie Nile’s birthday, we went out and I decided on a vampy look with a dark purple lip and my signature smoky eye of course. I wore a skull dress that I bought from a boutique in Australia. Don’t have the link at the moment. The lipstick is Smoked Purple from MAC.

Cheese, easy recipe, Havarti, healthy, iPhone 5, Monterey Jack, Soup, Tortilla, Trader Joe's, WordPress

20131104-142514.jpg

Happy Monday all!

I am posting this from the WordPress app on my iPhone 5. Let’s see how it goes. Today, I ate a comfort meal of tomato soup and my version of a somewhat healthy grilled cheese. Growing up, I would go over to my best friend Theresa’s – who I’ve known since 2nd grade! As a snack, she would always make this burrito-esque concoction of tortilla and Monterey Jack cheese. She would fry it up and we would eat it with her mom’s homemade salsa. Oh man – that salsa was the best salsa ever. I haven’t come across another like Angie’s. Sigh.

Anyways, the soup I got from Trader Joe’s – one of the best grocery stores IMO. It’s their organic tomato and roasted red pepper soup. I’m not a big tomato soup fan but this one is truly delicious. From the same shopping trip, I bought their low carb wheat tortilla and lite havarti cheese. To make the dish, I quickly sprayed my frying pan with canola spray (also from TJ’s) and when it was hot enough, threw my tortilla in. I split one slice of the cheese in half and laid both pieces in the middle of the tortilla. I folded over each side like an envelope and flipped the mini quesadilla. When the cheese was nice and melty, it was removed from the pan and cut on a bias. It was then dunked it into the hot soup and devoured.

blog, for the ladies, Google, Instagram, List of Sanrio characters, Political correctness, Polymath, renaissance woman, Seinfeld

Welcome lovelies,

Hello there!  I’m really glad you were able to stop by my blog for the modern day woman.  The name La Femme Ren represents the number of interests that the 21st century woman is into these days – whether it’s sports, fashion, travel or any number of things.  This blog is to engage the everyday modern woman – the working woman, the family-oriented woman – the woman that is increasingly pressured to become a super woman.  To be able to clean, cook, exercise, be made up, have a successful career, etc.  In my opinion – every woman is a Renaissance woman.  There are so many facets to all of us and we are here to explore and expose those features that make us phenomenal.

So, in this last year of my twenties, I realized that I haven’t recorded my personal thoughts or life events in almost ten years (previously via a series of diaries that ranged from Keroppi themed to purple velvet – oooh).  What better way to journalize than a blog these days?  Please join me in a documentation of personal growth – through the triumphs, failures, struggles and the fun in the journey we call life.  I really hope that most of you can relate to me as an everyday person – I don’t have an extraordinary talent but I do love life and everything it’s comprised of.

In appreciation of art in all forms, the love of new experiences and lessons learned will be documented in this blog.  We will discuss a wide spectrum of topics; most of which will be food, fashion, beauty, career, art, travel and more!  If I run out of topics to talk about a few times a week, I will then bore you with my past Instagram posts. LOL.

Disclaimer:  I will be honest and bound within my keen sense of morality and political correctness but my thinking is often in spiral form so you may get random posts about uncanny themes.  Hopefully it will make you laugh – a la Seinfeld-ish everyday humor. Also, I am new to this blog thing so please excuse the construction as I learn this process.  You may find a different look every once in awhile.  Thanks!

Okay, enough of the heavy – needed an intro to the blog and now we get into the fun stuff!

Bon appetit!
